Since Nelson Mandela’s death yesterday, I’ve noticed a lot of people who are well informed of his life acting like pompous elitist because of their knowledge. Posting on Facebook or Twitter commenting on how sad it is that uninformed people have to “look up who Nelson Mandela is” or “search for Nelson Mandela quotes” is weak and ineffective. If the global recognition of Mandela’s passing incites curiosity to learn more about his legacy, then that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Not in the slightest. The more people who inform themselves on who he was, the better our world will be.
“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”
